12 January, 2017International Cyprus Conference at which the ‘security and guarantee’ issue will be discussed has begun in Geneva at 11.30 local time. (TRNC time 13.30)
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres welcomed President Mustafa Akıncı and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Anastasiades at the entrance of the meeting hall. Ahead of the conference leaders talked privately with Secretary General for a while and then they entered the conference hall.
Beside the Turkish and Greek Cypriot sides, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, Greek Minister for Foreign Affairs Nikos Kocias and the UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson participated in the conference.
The President of the EU Commission, Jean Claude Juncker and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini participated in the conference as observers with a special role.
Meanwhile, President Mustafa Akıncı met with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu at a working group before the conference. The issues related to today’s conference at which ‘security and guarantees’ will be addressed were discussed at the meeting.
