15 August, 2016Prime Minister Hüseyin Özgürgün has expressed serious concerns about the Cyprus negotiations, saying that the negotiation process is still dictated by the demands of the Greek Cypriot side.
Prime Minister Özgürgün made his assessment of the situation during his appearance on a current affairs programme yesterday.
Responding to a question about the third tender round for hydrocarbon research by the Greek Cypriot Administration, Özgürgün said: “Despite the ongoing Cyprus negotiations, the Greek Cypriot side continues to press ahead with their unilateral actions on this shared resource. Because of this, my concern is that they have no real intentions for a settlement.”
Underlining that the Greek Cypriot side needs a settlement as much as the Turkish Cypriot side, Özgürgün added: “We have always bowed our heads and insisted on an agreement.”
Furthermore, Özgürgün emphasised the symbolic importance of ensuring that both the Aplıç and Derinya gates are opened simultaneously. As it stands, the Greek Cypriot side are opposed to opening the Aplıç gate because they believe this development will make Lefke a considerable centre.
