Eide to come to Cyprus

24 November, 2016Prime Minister Hüseyin Özgürgün stated that in spite of President Mustafa Akıncı’s “very flexible” approach, negotiations remained inconclusive due to the “wanting everything” attitude of the Greek Cypriot side.
Speaking at the programme in BRT, Özgürgün said: “I hope once again that the Greek Cypriot side will come to their senses. As long as they fail to adopt a common sense approach, it is inevitable that Turkish Cypriot side will continue on its way”.
Özgürgün also made clear his belief that the negative result of the two rounds of the Cyprus negotiations in Mont Pelerin was due to the attitudes of the Greek Cypriot side and Greece.
Emphasizing that the Turkish Cypriot people would not accept living as a minority, and the fundamental importance of equality, bi-zonality and the continuation of guarantees, Prime Minister Özgürgün added that the case for an ongoing guarantee was as clear today as it was in both 1963 and 1974.
Stating that the Turkish Cypriot side has never shied away from an agreement, an approach that has never been demonstrated by the Greek Cypriot side, Prime Minister Özgürgün noted that the Greek Cypriot side have acted in bad faith during many previous rounds of talks, which unfortunately seemed to be the case for this round as well.
