17 August, 2016President Akıncı discusses Cyprus negotiations with President Erdoğan in Ankara
18 August, 2016President Mustafa Akıncı travelled to Ankara yesterday evening to meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
The meeting between the two Presidents is scheduled to take place at the Presidential complex in Beştepe today.
Prior to his departure to Ankara, President Akıncı held a press conference at Ercan Airport in which he emphasized the importance of the 7 scheduled meetings which form part of the intensified negotiations between the Turkish Cypriots and the Greek Cypriots.
As important issues are on the agenda for the negotiations, President Akıncı said that consultation with Ankara is necessary and thus he requested a meeting with President Erdoğan.
“We are working in coordination with Turkey and I am sure that this meeting will make an important contribution to the settlement process.”
Turkey’s guarantee is very important for the Turkish Cypriot people, Akıncı said, and this will be discussed in the meeting with President Erdoğan.
President Akıncı also criticised certain statements made by the Greek Cypriots regarding issues such as territory, natural gas and guarantees, before adding that the Greek Cypriot Administration should not seek to create tension in the negotiations.
President Akıncı also reiterated his view that for his generation this is the last opportunity to find a solution to the Cyprus problem. An important opportunity will be missed if a solution cannot be reached in 2016, he noted.
