1 October, 2020Prime Minister Ersin Tatar met with Vice President of the Turkish Republic, Fuat Oktay, in Ankara and they made a joint statement after the meeting.
In the joint statement, Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay underlined that they evaluated the new developments in the region, including the Eastern Mediterranean, and said ‘It is important that TRNC should use its sovereignty rights and will not give up its sovereignty rights. This issue is not something to compensate’.
Following the statement by Oktay, TRNC Prime Minister Ersin Tatar mentioned the developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, and pointed out that the TRNC has gained a position and become one of the contracting parties and added that this is an honour. Tatar said ‘According to the developments in the Eastern Mediterranean we are now in favour of an agreement based on equal sovereignty. In the past the negotiations were all based on a politically equal federal solution, however, now a solution as mentioned does not look possible. Therefore, in the light of the new developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, we would like to keep our state alive on the basis of equal sovereignty and continue our relations in the same way with Turkey’
