Spokesman of the Turkish Foreign Ministry, Hami Aksoy, stated that the natural gas revenue sharing agreement signed between the Greek Cypriot Administration and some international companies in the Eastern Mediterranean cannot be accepted. Aksoy stressed that the so-called agreement usurps the rights of the Turkish Cypriots on the island.

In his written answer regarding the issue, Aksoy noted that they support the statements of the TRNC authorities on the issue. The agreement does not refer to the Turkish Cypriots and does not give any share to the Turkish Cypriots. This is not acceptable both for Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots. Stressing that the international companies which work with the Greek Cypriot Administration cannot disregard the equal rights of the Turkish Cypriots over petrol and natural gas resources, Aksoy underlined that Turkey will continue its principled and determined stance on the issue to protect the rights of the Turkish Cypriots and will take the necessary steps.

Furthermore, Aksoy pointed out that as long as the Greek Cypriot Administration continues their unilateral activities and does not include the Turkish Cypriots in revenue sharing, Turkey will continue to protect the continental shelf rights of the Turkish Cypriots. Adding that in this context, drilling vessels Fatih and Yavuz will start drilling in a short time in accordance with the licence given by the TRNC to the Turkish Petroleum Company in 2011, Aksoy reminded once more that it is the Greek Cypriot Administration which disregards the rights of the Turkish Cypriots on natural resources and continue their unilateral steps, whilst ignoring the warnings.
