9 February, 2017Speaker of the Assembly Sibel Siber has said that any agreement on Cyprus should eliminate the concerns of the Turkish Cypriots on security and guarantees.
Sibel Siber made the comment while giving statements to the press, after a half an hour meeting with President Akıncı on the Cyprus issue.
Stating that the aim was to reach a viable agreement based on political equality and which will guarantee the safety of the Turkish Cypriots, Siber warned that the good will of only one side was not enough.
Indicating that the Greek Cypriot side should respect the security concerns of the Turkish Cypriots, Siber said that the social memory of the Turkish Cypriots has meant they have not felt secure since the gates were opened 14 years ago.
Discussing the recent attack on Turkish Cypriot cars in Trodos, Siber said that while the incident could be considered small, the Greek Cypriot government did not take the necessary precautions to prevent such incidents or to catch the perpetrators.
Saying that trust cannot be maintained at the negotiating table, Siber stressed that the important thing is to reach a viable agreement on political equality.
Answering a question about her point of view on a solution to the talks, Siber said that she maintains her precautionary.
