Töre issues a message on the 15 July Greek-backed coup d’état

The Speaker of the TRNC Assembly Zorlu Töre issued a message on the 50^th anniversary of the coup d’état carried out on 15 July 1974 by Greek nationalists with the understanding of Enosis, backed by the junta administration in Greece.

Töre stated that with the Bloody Christmas attacks that began in 1963, the Turkish Cypriot people were excluded from the Republic of Cyprus, of which they were equal founding partners, the Republic of Cyprus was transformed into a Greek state and a major step was taken towards the annexation of Cyprus to Greece.

In his message, Töre said: “In this bloody fascist coup, hundreds of Greeks were killed and attacks and massacres were committed against the Turkish Cypriot people. Thereupon, peace and tranquility came to Cyprus thanks to the ‘happy’ Peace Operation carried out by the Motherland Türkiye on 20 July 1974 by using its international rights under the Treaties of Guarantee and Alliance.

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which was established by the Turkish Cypriot people, who have been living free and independent in these lands for a long time, by exercising their right to self-determination, will live forever.”
