14 November, 2024The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has been granted full membership to the International Civil Protection Mechanism of the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS), according to the information by the TRNC Civil Defence Organization.
The TRNC has actively participated in all meetings held throughout the establishment process of the international Civil Protection Mechanism established under the OTS.
In the Declaration of the 8th Summit of the Organisation of Turkic States held in Istanbul on 12 November 2021, it was decided to establish a disaster response unit within the Organization of Turkic States under the name “Organization of Turkic States’ Civil Protection Mechanism” to conduct joint initiatives for search, rescue and rehabilitation to mitigate the effects of natural disasters and contribute to the recovery.
The agreement prepared in line with this decision was signed at the 11th Summit of OTS held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan on 6 November 2024. Türkiye-based OTS Civil Protection Mechanism was established under the agreement.
Following the OTS Secretariat’s call to initiate this mechanism, online negotiations were held on 23, 30 May and 2 June 2023 with the participation of the representatives of member and observer countries on the draft agreement for the establishment of the mechanism.
The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus also participated in the online meetings moderated by the OTS Secretariat. The Presidency of the TRNC Civil Defence Organisation represented the TRNC in the meetings.
