TRNC Presidency: “Turkish side has always showed constructive attitude in the negotiation processes”

TRNC Presidency stated that the Turkish side has always showed constructive attitude in the negotiation processes executed under the auspices of the UN since 1968 to reach a permanent solution in Cyprus.

TRNC Presidency spokesperson Berna Çelik Doğruyol stated that Turkish Cypriot side, who approved the “UN Comprehensive Solution Plan” named as Annan Plan in 2004 which was discussed during four years, also showed more than enough flexibility in Crans Montana in 2017 in order to reach a sustainable solution in Cyprus.

In her written statement, expressing that due to the Greek Cypriot mentality, a solution could not be reached in Cyprus, Doğruyol stressed that mentality of the Greek Cypriots has not changed, on the contrary, has become deeper. Adding that it is not possible to wait a different result from that mentality, Doğruyol stated :“The negotiation process which has continued almost half a century to reach a federal solution, has become an instrument for the Greek Cypriots, who have exposed the Turkish Cypriot people to isolation and restrictions, to continue the status quo on the island against us. It is frequently expressed by the UN that the current status quo in Cyprus is unacceptable and that a permanent solution is essential. In the light of these facts, President Ersin Tatar defends a compromise based on sovereign equality and cooperation between the two people and the two states, with the authority received from his people. This consensus model has received the full support of the Republic of Turkey. The Turkish side made a proposal to hold the 5 + UN informal meeting in search of a common ground between the two sides to reach a sustainable solution. Our President has announced that we will attend this meeting with good will and a constructive attitude. We expect the same goodwill and constructive attitude from the Greek Cypriot side and Greece”.
