President Mustafa Akıncı stated that his government has not abandoned efforts to reach a solution in spite of the deadlock in negotiations. He reiterated that his attempts to reach an agreement continue. .
Akıncı also stressed that the government has no intention of giving away their share of any possible partnership state.
In his Medicine Day speech on on 14th March, Akıncı said that this is the first step towards signing an agreement and that what is most important is that the agreement is maintained. “We do not want the events of 1963 to happen again. Surely, is there a connection between a culture of peace, federal culture, empathy and teaching Enosis in schools? We want the Greek Cypriot side to correct their mistake. I think that they will find a way to do this and that there are some opportunities in this direction,” Akıncı stressed.
Furthermore, Akıncı added that he has obtained authority from his people to reach a bi-communal, bi-zonal solution based on political equality and that efforts towards resolving the issue will continue in this vein.
Akıncı will meet today with Espen Barth Eide, Special Advisor to the UN Secretary-General on Cyprus.
The meeting will be held at the President’s residence. Eide will also meet with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Anastasiades today.
