21 February, 2017Presidential Spokesperson Barış Burcu stated that the decision taken by the Greek Cypriot Parliament has seriously harmed the negotiation process.
Speaking on a program broadcast on BRT, Burcu stated that the Greek Cypriot leader should take concrete steps in South Cyprus, where the presidential system is implemented, in order to revoke the Parliament’s Enosis decision. He called on the leader to take an executive decision and put this into force as the head of the executive power.
“The response so far by the Greek Cypriot leader is not aimed at supporting peace talks, but instead focussed on the forthcoming presidential elections in the south.” Burcu continued. He added that they are still waiting for the Greek Cypriot administration to take concrete steps on this issue.
Burcu also stated that reactions to this decision in the south of Cyprus are also on the rise.
‘‘This issue here is not simply the disagreement between Akıncı and Anastasiades, but the serious damage it is causing between the populations on both sides of Cyprus” said Burcu.
“While the negotiations continue, the impact of such a decision by the Greek Cypriot parliament cannot be underestimated” said Burcu. Stating that this decision is hampering the negotiation process and increasing existing insecurities, Burcu also warned that every passing moment worked against the Cyprus negotiation process.
