President Akıncı called for five party conference
28 November, 2016Denktaş: “We do not want Cyprus negotiations to drag on”
29 November, 2016The UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser to Cyprus Espen Barth Eide stated that the path to progress in the talks has not yet been found, but in order to find one, it is important for the leaders to meet.
Eide, who made the statement after his meeting with Akıncı and Anastasiades, said there was no reason to cast doubt over efforts to find a solution as both the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot leaders are willing to resolve the dispute.
Highlighting that the outcome from Mont Pelerin will not be an obstacle to the peace talks progressing, Eide said that a solution must be found to overcome this, adding “we have not done so yet, but these meetings will have to continue. I do not think that’s easy. The shuttle diplomacy will go on.”
Eide also noted that returning to the negotiating table was up to the two leaders and both of his meetings with the leaders have been constructive and honest.
