Sociologist Kudret Akay stated that in a survey named “Political Tendencies January 2015” conducted by him with the aim of determining political tendencies of the TRNC people, participants were asked “How do you identify yourself ?” and majority of the participants identified themselves as Turkish Cypriots.

46.7 % of participants identified themselves as Turkish Cypriots, 25.9 % as Cypriots, 9.3 % as Turkish, 7.8 % as Muslim Turk, 7.1 % as Turk of Cyprus, 1.7 % as Muslim and 1.6 % as other.

Akay stated that if the identity definition is taken into consideration, “Turkish Cypriot” is the main determining factor.
