2 July, 2025The Turkish Cypriot member of the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP), Hakkı Müftüzade issued a written statement addressing recent remarks made by the Standing Rapporteur of the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, MP François-Xavier Bellamy along with several other European Union MPs, which he described as ‘accusatory and unfounded” towards the military authorities.
Müftüzade stressed that politicized rhetoric hinders the efforts to locate missing persons and affirmed that the military authorities provide comprehensive support to the committee, always taking into account the concerns of the families of the missing.
He further clarified that excavation sites within zones are jointly assessed by both Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot members of the CMP based on the reports and factual data provided by the Committee.
Müftüzde reiterated that the military authority maintains a consistent and unworried commitment to supporting the CMP in all matters by always prioritizing the families of the missing persons.
