Lakadamyalı: “50 citizens have applied to our representative offices so far, we are awaiting the reopening of the airspace”
2 March, 2026Speaker of the Assembly of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Ziya Öztürkler has strongly criticized remarks made by Annita Demetriou, President of the Greek Cypriot House of Representatives, stating, “Demetriou’s accusation in Brussels that Türkiye is an occupier goes beyond a lack of historical knowledge and reveals political ignorance.”
In his written statement, Öztürkler emphasized that the Turkish Cypriot people endured great suffering until 1974, paid a heavy price, fought for their existence, were subjected to genocide and massacres, yet did not yield and through resilience and determination, they established their own state.
Öztürkler further underlined that Turkish soldiers are not occupiers on the island, stating “They serve under the umbrella of the Security Forces Command and the Cyprus Turkish Peace Forces as guarantors of peace and security”.
The Speaker also stated “The audacity of Demetriou to portray Türkiye as an occupier in Brussels as the Speaker of a state indulged by the EU does not grant her the right to speak on behalf of the whole island. The Turkish Cypriot people will yield to no pressure and will never remain silent in the face of injustice or unfounded accusations.”
