
Öztürkler decries Demetriou’s remarks on Türkiye

3 March, 2026Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mustafa Lakadamyalı announced that 50 citizens of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) currently in Iran and various Gulf countries have applied to TRNC representative offices. He noted that arrangement for their return will be made once the airspace in these countries is reopened.
Speaking to the Turkish News Agency (TAK) regarding the situation of citizens in the Gulf countries, Lakadamyalı stated that a group of 37 people were in Dubai, United Arab Emirates for tourism and are presently safe in their hotels.
He pointed out that the group remains in close contact with TRNC representatives and added that the Consul General of the Republic of Türkiye had also visited them at their hotel yesterday.
Lakadamyalı further indicated that 11 citizens in the United Arab Emirates and two citizens in Doha, who are not part of the tourist group and are in the region for business and personal travel are likewise in communication with the authorities. Owing to the closure of the airspace and the suspension of flight, these individual required to remain in their current locations until travel becomes feasible. Plans for their return will be initiated as soon as the airspace reopens.
He called on citizens to remain in secure locations and to avoid unnecessary travel, assuring them representative offices stand ready to provide assistance if required.
Emphasizing that the Foreign Ministry’s Consular Call Centre operates around the clock, Lakadamyalı added that citizens may contact the call centre as well as the representative offices in Abu Dhabi, Doha, Kuwait and Muscat in the region.
