5 July, 2021President Ersin Tatar stated that as they expressed in Geneva, appointing a Special Representative for Cyprus before starting the official negotiation process would not be meaningful and it might even cause problems.
Stressing that UN Secretary General’s Temporary Special Envoy for Cyprus, Jane Holl Lute is already working to examine whether there is a common ground to start official negotiations, Tatar said that it would not be right to appoint a higher ranking Special Representative at this time.
President Tatar received the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu who made a working visit to the TRNC.
Following their meeting at the TRNC Presidency, an inter-delegation meeting was also held. Tatar and Çavuşoğlu made a statement to the press following their meetings and they answered the questions of the journalists.
In his speech at the press meeting, Tatar reminded that an official negotiation process could be started with the acceptance of sovereign equality of the Turkish Cypriot side, adding that in such a case, there is a chance for an agreement in Cyprus.
Turkish Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu stated that appointing a Special Representative would only be meaningful if a decision was taken to start a new negotiation process.
