TRNC President Ersin Tatar pointed out the Cyprus problem can be solved with a model of two equal sovereign states adding that historical mistakes were made against Turkish Cypriots and Turkey.

President Tatar held a press conference after meeting with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in Brussels on Friday (25th June).

Stressing that he told the UN Secretary General about the inequality created by the non-representation of Turkish Cypriots in the European Union (EU), Tatar pointed out that the Secretary General stated that this is true but there is nothing he can do about it.

Stating that the UN Secretary General expressed that during his time as the Prime Minister of Portugal, he worked hard to get Turkey into the European Union and that if Turkey had been admitted to the EU, a much more positive and different world would be mentioned, Tatar stated that historical mistakes were made against Turkish Cypriots and Turkey.

The President pointed out that their struggle continues and added that two equal sovereign states in Cyprus should be mentioned in order to find the truth.

Tatar emphasised the importance of maintaining the existence of Turkish Cypriots for security and peace with their sovereignty and preserving their ties with the Republic of Turkey and referred to the problems that would be experienced by entering the EU as a single state without ensuring the sovereignty of the Turkish Cypriots.

Stressing “We cannot give up the protection of Turkey and cannot sever our ties with Turkey”, Tatar reminded that Turkey fully supports their new vision and policies.

Tatar called on the UN and the EU to take the proposals of the Turkish Cypriot side seriously and demanded that the injustice done to the Turkish Cypriot people should be taken into account and steps taken in order to fulfil their sovereignty expectations.
