16 January, 2019The Presidential Spokesman Barış Burcu stressed that the continuation of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus in the same conditions after 55 years is not a sustainable and healthy situation.
Pointing out that the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus and the extension of its mandate required the consent of all parties to the dispute as in the whole world as stated in the UN document, the Brahimi Report, Burcu set that this reality and the demands of the Turkish Cypriot side which was not included in the report is a serious shortcoming.
Burcu evaluated the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’s report which was distributed to The UN Security Council members regarding the extension of the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).
Pointing out that open ended processes which are not result oriented have come to an end in this report and that negotiations should be considered in a foreseeable horizon; Burcu added that this has coincided with President Mustafa Akıncı’s determination that he revealed in this direction all along.
