Tuzla Martyrs Commemorated

Tuzla martyrs who were martyred between 1956 and 1974 in the struggle for the existence of Turkish Cypriots were commemorated with a ceremony.

In his speech at the ceremony, Gazimağusa Mayor, Süleyman Uluçay pointed out that Turkish Cypriots endured deep suffer when they lost their martyrs. Stating that a similar pain was experienced in the 2023 earthquake, Major Uluçay emphasized that the people were in unity and solidarity during the disaster as during the war years.

President Ersin Tatar also attended the ceremony and delivered a speech. President Tatar said “if we can live in peace and security today, we owe this to Türkiye and our martyrs”.  Highlighting the importance of passing down the pain and experiences of the Turkish Cypriot people to future generations, Tatar expressed that many of the martyrs were abducted and brutally murdered, before 1974, not during the war.

In his speech, President Tatar also pointed out that any agreement on the island should be based on trust and peace, for the benefit of both sides.
