Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Donmez stated that as of yesterday (7th August) the Yavuz drilling ship had reached a boring depth of 1,710 metres.

Minister Donmez, who came to the TRNC on the previous day to examine the drilling on-site, made a statement to a group of journalists.

Donmez, who stated that the Yavuz drilling ship had started drilling, said “As of  7th August we have reached approximately 1,710 metres of depth of boring. Drilling will be continued for approximately 2½ to 3 months. We hope that when we reach the target point, we will have located the presence of natural gas here.”

He also stated that they always stand behind the rights and interests of the Turkish people who live in Cyprus, and they do not acknowledge the unlawful fait accompli which is carried out unilaterally by the Greek Cypriot Administration.

The Minister reminded that last month, the TRNC government offered to establish a joint committee to implement the island’s natural resources collectively and to share them justly and equitably and he said that they support this offer as the Government of Turkey.
