President Akıncı: “A referendum could be held in mid-2017, depending on how the Cyprus negotiations progress”
Date Added: 05 October 2016, 11:50

After yesterday’s meeting with the Greek Cypriot Leader Nikos Anastasiades, President Akıncı held a press conference in the Presidency.

When asked about the date of a possible referendum, Akıncı stressed that a referendum could be held in mid-2017 if a political consensus is reached before the end of 2016, and technical issues and documentation which will be carried over to 2017 are completed. Akıncı also said that sufficient time will be provided to the public to read and understand the text of any agreement.
Both parties are aiming to minimize the number of divergent views on four chapters of the negotiations in October. Akıncı stated that issues of territory should be discussed abroad in a similar format to the current camp negotiations.  The issues of security and guarantees can then be discussed at a multilateral meeting.

According to Akıncı, all parties are well aware of the importance of the timing of the negotiations. Both Leaders reiterated that they aim to reach a solution by the end of the year.
