Turkish Cypriot theatre movement, first started on its way from the traditional theatre like the Turkish theatre then showed a similar development, such as opening to Western theatre. The Origin of the Turkish Cypriot theatre movement is based on traditional Turkish theatrical theatre.
However, after adopting the Western theatre at the beginning of the 1900s, the traditional Turkish Cypriot theatre movement was gradually forgotten and the concept of Western theatre has dominated this movement completely.
The first theatre of the Turkish Cypriots called ‘First Stage’ was founded in 1963, and then was known as “State Theatre” in 1966. Cyprus Turkish State Theatre has staged various plays inside and outside the country.
Today, other local and foreign theatre groups are operating besides the Cyprus Turkish State Theatre. Many theatre groups from foreign countries add spice and zest to the cultural life of the island during the theatre festivals.
A density of artistic activities is being experienced due to social activities of the multinational students of the Universities in the island.
In our country importance is being given to education on theatre and performing arts. Training is given at theatre clubs in secondary education and related departments of the universities.
